Selecting a different San Francisco photogenic locale for each workshop, an experienced, passionate pro-photographer, with teaching experience, will rendezvous with max 12 participants to demonstrate & supervise lessons on mechanics of digital cameras, as well as composition strategies, allowing each participant to turn snap shots into compelling images. There are long existing, easy to learn, composition techniques to capture a scene, person or activity. Each participant tries each technique while the instructor observes and coaches. Once learned the composition tricks apply to any future photo activity whether a family get together, a neighborhood stroll or a once-in-a lifetime travel experience. Every workshop rendezvous is in a different scenic locale to vary photo themes from street portraiture, landscapes, interior lighting, architecture, action, etc.

Itinerary

There are charming, intense and whimsical street portraits to be had in Noe Valley no matter which direction you point your lens. You’ll find dog walkers, skateboarders, couples hand in hand and the other players of your garden variety revitalized community to tell a universal story for the entertainment and enlightenment of those who view our images, yourself included. In addition to sidewalk outdoor cafe patrons to photograph, there are the rows and rows of Victorian and Edwardian houses, 4th highest number of them in San Francisco, to add color, place and time to your visual narrative.

And every Saturday, from 8AM to 1PM is the Noe Valley Farmer’s Market when vendors come in and set up stands to sell produce, fruits, hand made items and other wares that offer environmental portrait opportunities and close up abstractions of colorful fruits and vegetables.

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of the Noe Valley shooting locale is the vibrant wall murals, photo ops in and of themselves, but also excellent backdrops for portraiture. Your instructor is an expert on engaging passerby’s to pose, and can help you learn the same friendly approach to getting cooperation amongst strangers, or work with a workshop co-participant as your model, teacher included. Maybe a group shot. You might even be the subject for others! Besides people to accessorize these murals, there are the regularly appearing birds in flight, cars and bicyclists driving by to help you learn the art of panning, creating a sense of action within your photograph. Or for study in contrasting color layouts, keep an eye out for the lone fire hydrant, street sign, mail box or other stationary item within proximity of the mural that serve to highlight the art work and create a dynamic visual impact of your images.

Meet at the Star Bucks located at 3995 24th StreetSan Francisco, CA 94114.

Duration: 3 hours

Location: Noe Valley, San Francisco, CA

Then we will go across the street to the de Young Museum and go to the tower where we will get a grand view of the park and San Francisco. Next we will play in the sculpture garden of the museum. When we are finished we will have coffee at the de Young museum and maybe even play with the shadows of the chairs.

Not surprisingly, the Embarcadero is where one embarks. It is filled with restaurants, farmers’ markets, and sidewalk strollers out enjoying the day. As its name suggests, the Embarcadero boasts many forms of transportation, from ships to railways to bikers, all perfect vehicles to learn the art of panning. (Sorry for the pun.) You too can embark on a fun, exciting adventure with your Digital Photo Academy instructor as you photograph the Embarcadero.
You will photograph everything from the architecture to the characters walking down the street to the palm trees lining the sidewalks. It can be overwhelming to try to capture so many different elements and details separately or in one integrated image, but your instructor will give you the tools you need to confidently capture the dizzying scene in a dynamic way or separate each component for another kind of impression of tranquility and simplicity.

During the shoot, you will learn the secrets of the trade from the DPA professional photographer and new compositional techniques such as how to bring out the colors in nature and architecture, approach strangers for their photograph, and use light and shadow to highlight certain details in your subjects.

Your DPA instructor will walk the area with you, all the while conveying the concepts of composition and camera operation to help you approach this fascinating area in a way that will help you access your creative point of view and enhance the wonderful light.

We will meet outside of Boulette’s Larder located at 1 Ferry Building #48, San Francisco, CA 94111 next to the Ferry Plaza.
