On quiet footpaths and trails, your professional guide leads you along the winding Sausalito waterfront to the Golden Gate Bridge, with views of Angel Island, the Tiburon Peninsula, Alcatraz Island, and the San Francisco skyline on the way. Our route heads into the Marin Headlands in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area for a steady climb to Battery Spencer for panoramic views above the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. We pause to take photos and enjoy lunch or a snack (not included) high above the Golden Gate and San Francisco Bay before retracing our route back to Sausalito, or head back to the City on an unforgettable on-your-own walk across the Golden Gate Bridge (1.7 miles), a must-do for many visitors to San Francisco.

We meet at 10:30AM at the Sausalito ferry landing in charming downtown Sausalito before heading out on our walk to the Golden Gate Bridge. I to Fort Baker, a former military base at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. Heading toward the bridge along the water's edge we enjoy a unique and commanding view of the Bridge's North Tower and wind beneath the bridge following a car-free road.  A short trail brings us to a spectacular overlook high above the bridge deck and the mouth of the Golden Gate. On clear days you will enjoy vistas of the City, San Francisco Bay, the Marin Headlands, and you may even get a glimpse of the Farallon Islands on the horizon. On foggy days, the span is shrouded in moody ocean mists. We retrace our steps back to bridge level where, if you wish, you can head across the Golden Gate Bridge on your own (1.7 miles) to San Francisco, or loop with your guide back to the Sausalito Ferry Terminal, where you can either quickly return on the ferry back to San Francisco, or explore Sausalito and catch a later ferry back to the City.

Please note this important information:

If leaving from San Francisco, you will need to take the 10AM Sausalito Ferry, which departs from the San Francisco Ferry Building at the foot of Market St.

Return Ferry Times: 1:55PM / 3:20PM / 4:45PM

Sausalito Ferry Fare: $10.75 one-way

Come explore the wildlife-rich shoreline of the San Francisco Bay aboard the Schooner Freda B!

On this refreshing morning sail, we'll board in Sausalito and cruise to the most promising areas for bird activity. If the conditions are right, we'll start by checking out some local hotspots in Richardson Bay, which is recognized as an Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society. In addition to a plethora of year-round bird species, Richardson Bay hosts a variety of migratory birds in the wintertime, including sandpipers, avocets, and godwits.

Then we'll sail through Raccoon Srait and pass by Angel Island, the largest island in San Francisco Bay and home to seals, pelicans, cormorants, and herons.

Depending on the conditions past Angel Island, we'll either sail further north or east. Further north we can skirt along Corte Madera Marsh, another important stop for migrating shorebirds and home to protected species such as the San Pablo Song Sparrow and California Clapper Rail. We could even head as far north as "The Brothers," a series of rocks that are also prime for spotting birds.

If the conditions aren't suitable to head north, we'll head east and reach Brooks Island, another Audubon Important Bird Area that supports exceptional concentrations of seaducks and migrating shorebirds during the wintertime.

Minimum of 6 people required.
Note: If you have fewer than 6 people in your party, please call the day before to check on availability. The Sausalito Wooden Boat Tour guide book offers a self-guidex option

Growing out of the abandoned industrial shipyards built during WWII, Sausalito’s storied house boat community has long been a haven for artist, eccentrics, and bohemians escaping the daily confines of a more structured society.  On this 3 hour walking tour through the old wooden shipyards and floating docks hugging the coast of Richardson Bay, local author and artist Victoria Colella revisits the wildly entertaining history of these floating homesteads and shares some of her more colorful anecdotes about the people who lived here.

Starting along the waterfront near the oldest surviving wooden hulled ferryboat on the West Coast, your guide will explain how wooden boat building came to define the town of “little willow tree”, which is how Sausalito translates in Spanish, and how it impacted future development.  Moving from dock to dock, you’ll learn how WWII transformed the area, briefly turning the bay into the busiest shipbuilding region in the world during the latter half of the global conflict.  You’ll learn about the incredibly colorful history of the artist and cast-offs, musicians and hippies who moved into the area after the war, turning it into a vibrant alternative cultural center that contrasted sharply with the increasingly affluent communities that grew up on the nearby hills.

You’ll finish the tour with an understanding of how the craft of building these wooden boats remains alive today, visiting the historic Marinship shipyards where the famed Liberty Ships were once launched and restored houseboats, luxury yachts, and bay-area ferries are still built and launched today.  Learn the heart and soul of this fascinating seaside community from a local guide whose passion for her town and community translates to a rich and rewarding experience throughout the entire tour.
