On quiet footpaths and trails, your professional guide leads you along the winding Sausalito waterfront to the Golden Gate Bridge, with views of Angel Island, the Tiburon Peninsula, Alcatraz Island, and the San Francisco skyline on the way. Our route heads into the Marin Headlands in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area for a steady climb to Battery Spencer for panoramic views above the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. We pause to take photos and enjoy lunch or a snack (not included) high above the Golden Gate and San Francisco Bay before retracing our route back to Sausalito.

We meet at 10:30AM at the Sausalito ferry landing in charming downtown Sausalito before heading out on our walk to the Golden Gate Bridge. I to Fort Baker, a former military base at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge. Heading toward the bridge along the water's edge we enjoy a unique and commanding view of the Bridge's North Tower and wind beneath the bridge following a car-free road.  A short trail brings us to a spectacular overlook high above the bridge deck and the mouth of the Golden Gate. On clear days you will enjoy vistas of the City, San Francisco Bay, the Marin Headlands, and you may even get a glimpse of the Farallon Islands on the horizon. On foggy days, the span is shrouded in moody ocean mists. We loop back and conclude our walk at the Sausalito Ferry Terminal, where you can either quickly return on the ferry back to San Francisco, or explore Sausalito and catch a later ferry back to the City.

Please note this important information:

If leaving from San Francisco, you will need to take the 10AM Sausalito Ferry, which departs from the San Francisco Ferry Building at the foot of Market St.

Return Ferry Times: 1:55PM / 3:20PM / 4:45PM

Sausalito Ferry Fare: $10.75 one-way

Historic Sausalito Houseboat Walking Tour

Historic Sausalito Houseboat Walking Tour - Sausalito, California

Duration: 3 hours
Location: Sausalito, California

From USD
$58.82

Visit Sausalito’s famed houseboats and learn the storied history of one of the bay’s most iconic landmarks on this 3 hour walking tour.  Explore WWII era shipyards and learn how wooden boat building has long impacted the quirky town on the northern side of the Golden Gate.  Hear stories of the bohemian writers and influential artist who defined an era, from American expressionist Walter Kuhlman to southern transplant Otis Redding, who spent his short time here recording the song “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay” just days before his fatal plane crash.  Learn how the dozens of seemingly unconnected threads of history combine to create a rich tapestry of people, personalities, and art forms known as Sausalito from a local artist and author.

Growing out of the abandoned industrial shipyards built during WWII, Sausalito’s storied house boat community has long been a haven for artist, eccentrics, and bohemians escaping the daily confines of a more structured society.  On this 3 hour walking tour through the old wooden shipyards and floating docks hugging the coast of Richardson Bay, local author and artist Victoria Colella revisits the wildly entertaining history of these floating homesteads and shares some of her more colorful anecdotes about the people who lived here.

Starting along the waterfront near the oldest surviving wooden hulled ferryboat on the West Coast, your guide will explain how wooden boat building came to define the town of “little willow tree”, which is how Sausalito translates in Spanish, and how it impacted future development.  Moving from dock to dock, you’ll learn how WWII transformed the area, briefly turning the bay into the busiest shipbuilding region in the world during the latter half of the global conflict.  You’ll learn about the incredibly colorful history of the artist and cast-offs, musicians and hippies who moved into the area after the war, turning it into a vibrant alternative cultural center that contrasted sharply with the increasingly affluent communities that grew up on the nearby hills.

You’ll finish the tour with an understanding of how the craft of building these wooden boats remains alive today, visiting the historic Marinship shipyards where the famed Liberty Ships were once launched and restored houseboats, luxury yachts, and bay-area ferries are still built and launched today.  Learn the heart and soul of this fascinating seaside community from a local guide whose passion for her town and community translates to a rich and rewarding experience throughout the entire tour.

Stroll, read, write poetry, sing songs, create art and win the prize!! From the Captain, First Mate, Navigator, Signal Man, Photographer, Journalist and Artist, all will play their part to ensure their team takes home the best prizes. Using the Sausalito Wooden Boat Tour guide book, a list of clues, compass and timer, participants will be required to pool their knowledge in order to locate Sausalito's hidden treasures - The wooden boats and historic vessels that grace our shore. When the teams return to home base, the scores will be tallied and prizes distributed. This activity takes about two to two and a half hours to complete.

Participants meet up with their guide at a pre-designated Sausalito waterfront location.  Here they receive a brief overview of the activity, teams are defined, roles are assigned, material handed out and ground rules for the treasure hunt explained.

Teams stroll out to the boat docks where they find the treasures, write poems, draw pictures, keep score, and then return to designated meet-up location for the awards ceremony. Sometimes we meet up in a park, sometimes at an outdoor venue or local restaurant.

Winning team gets first pick of awards offered.  These awards are not included in the price of the treasure hunt.  Special arrangements can be made or participants can provide their own awards. When you ask us to provide awards, we bring local Sausalito artists and authors to you by offering a selection of waterfront artwork, greeting cards and the Sausalito Wooden Boat Tour guide book.
